coronate

Bestow a crown

To coronate is to crown someone as monarch or place a crown on their head.

The word is a back-formation from coronation and sounds awkward to many speakers, who prefer the established verb crown: The archbishop will crown the new king.

Still, coronate appears in both serious and playful contexts: She was coronated homecoming queen.
