concurring opinion

Parallel judicial reasoning

A concurring opinion is a judicial opinion that agrees with the court's decision but offers different reasoning or additional commentary.

A judge writes one to express why they reached the same conclusion through an alternative legal path, or to emphasize points the majority opinion didn't address: Justice Thomas filed a concurring opinion questioning the precedent.

Distinguished from a dissenting opinion, which disagrees with the outcome.
