compost pile

Garden waste mound

A compost pile is a heap of organic waste—vegetable scraps, leaves, grass clippings—left to decompose into nutrient-rich soil amendment.

The pile requires turning and moisture to break down properly: I added the coffee grounds to the compost pile.

Figuratively, anything abandoned to slow decay might be called a compost pile.
