code-switch

Alter linguistic mode

Code-switching is shifting between languages, dialects, or communication styles depending on context.

A person might speak one way with family and another at work, or alternate between Spanish and English mid-conversation: She code-switches effortlessly between her Caribbean patois and standard American English.

The term originated in linguistics but now describes any adaptive shift in self-presentation across social settings.
