co-debtor

Shared loan party

A co-debtor is someone who shares responsibility for a debt with another person.

Both parties are legally obligated to repay the full amount—if one defaults, the other remains liable.

The term appears most often in bankruptcy and loan contexts: Her ex-husband was listed as a co-debtor on the car loan.

Also spelled codebtor.
