chytrid

Frog-decimating microorganism

Chytrid refers to a group of primitive fungi (Chytridiomycota) that reproduce using motile spores with whip-like tails.

Most are decomposers in soil and water, but one species causes chytridiomycosis, a disease devastating amphibian populations worldwide: Chytrid fungus has driven dozens of frog species to extinction.

Often used as shorthand for this pathogenic species.
