Chatlines are telephone services where callers can talk to strangers, typically for companionship, flirtation, or sexual conversation.
Popular before the internet made such connections easier, chatlines charged by the minute and were often advertised late at night: He ran up huge phone bills calling chatlines.
Some were explicitly adult; others marketed themselves as dating services.
