chase the dragon
Inhale heated heroin
Chase the dragon is slang for inhaling the vapor of heroin (or sometimes other drugs) heated on foil, the user following the drifting smoke with a tube.
The phrase evokes pursuing something elusive—the high that's never quite caught.
It can extend metaphorically to any compulsive pursuit of diminishing returns: He's been chasing the dragon since his first promotion.
