change of state

Shift in condition

A change of state is the transformation of matter from one physical form to another—solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or the reverse.

Water changing to ice or steam are common examples.

The term also applies in computing and electronics, where a system transitions from one condition to another: The sensor detects any change of state in the circuit.
