caustics

Substances that corrode

Caustics are chemicals capable of burning or corroding organic tissue through chemical action—lye, strong acids, concentrated bleach.

The term also appears in optics and computer graphics, where caustics are the bright patterns created when light refracts or reflects through curved surfaces: the caustics dancing on the pool bottom, rendering realistic caustics in water scenes.
