cattle-drive

Moving livestock westward

A cattle-drive is the herding of livestock over long distances to market, railheads, or new grazing land.

The term evokes the American Old West, when cowboys drove herds hundreds of miles along routes like the Chisholm Trail: The cattle-drive took six weeks from Texas to Kansas.

The practice largely ended with the expansion of railroads.
