casting rod
Angler's throwing stick
A casting rod is a fishing rod designed for use with a baitcasting or spincasting reel, where the reel sits on top of the rod and the angler's thumb controls the spool during the cast.
Casting rods tend to be stiffer than spinning rods and offer more precision for placing lures: He prefers a casting rod for bass fishing in heavy cover.
