baitcasting reel
Angler's spool mechanism
A baitcasting reel is a fishing reel mounted on top of the rod, with a revolving spool that releases line during the cast.
Unlike spinning reels, baitcasting reels require more skill to operate—the angler must thumb the spool to prevent backlash, a tangled mess of line called a bird's nest.
Preferred by experienced anglers for accuracy and control when casting heavier lures.
