cardinal point

North or south

A cardinal point is one of the four principal directions on a compass: north, south, east, and west.

These serve as the fundamental reference points for navigation and orientation, with all other directions (northeast, southwest, etc.) defined in relation to them.

The trail heads toward the cardinal point of due north.
