north star

Life's directing beacon

A north star is a guiding principle or ultimate goal that directs decisions and actions: Customer satisfaction is our north star.

The metaphor comes from Polaris, the star that remains fixed in the northern sky while others appear to rotate around it, making it useful for navigation.

Any reliable reference point for staying on course can be called a north star. (Capitalized North Star is the actual star Polaris.)
