W
Letter before X
W is a ligature of VV.
In Latin V always had the vowel value of U, and double U (VV) was employed to represent the consonant value.
In 9th century England, a special Anglo-Saxon character was adopted to represent the sound of W, which in 1280 was in turn replaced by W.
