carbonado
Dark polycrystalline gemstone
Carbonado names two unrelated things.
The older sense is a piece of meat or fish scored and grilled over coals—a cooking method now mostly forgotten.
The newer sense, from Brazilian Portuguese, is a form of industrial diamond: black, opaque, and extremely hard, used for drilling and cutting rather than jewelry.
Carbonado bits can cut through the hardest rock.
