car hop
Skating restaurant worker
A car hop is a server at a drive-in restaurant who brings food to customers waiting in their parked cars.
The term evokes mid-20th-century American dining culture, when drive-ins were popular and servers—often on roller skates—would hop from car to car taking orders and delivering meals on window-mounted trays.
The car hop brought our burgers and shakes right to the window.
Though drive-in restaurants are less common today, a few retro establishments still employ car hops.
