canal town
Lock-side community
A canal town is a settlement that developed along a canal, typically during the 18th or 19th century when canals were major commercial arteries.
These towns grew around locks, warehouses, and loading points: The old canal town still has its original towpath and stone bridges.
Many canal towns declined after railroads replaced waterway shipping but now attract tourists drawn to their historic character.
