burnup

Reduce to ash

Burnup refers to the measure of how much energy has been extracted from nuclear fuel, typically expressed as the amount of fissile material consumed per unit of fuel.

In reactor physics, higher burnup indicates more efficient use of fuel before it must be replaced.

The term also appears in aerospace contexts, where it describes the destruction of an object—usually a spacecraft or debris—as it reenters Earth's atmosphere and is consumed by frictional heating.

The satellite completed its burnup over the Pacific Ocean.
