bumper jack
Roadside vehicle hoist
A bumper jack is a mechanical lifting device designed to raise a vehicle by hooking onto the bumper, once standard equipment in car trunks for changing flat tires.
The scissor-style or ratcheting mechanism allowed drivers to lift one corner of the car high enough to remove a wheel.
Modern vehicles with plastic bumpers have largely replaced these with more compact bottle jacks or scissor jacks that lift from the frame.
