bride-wealth

Groom's family pays

Bride-wealth is property or money given by a groom or his family to the bride's family at marriage.

The practice occurs in many African, Asian, and Pacific cultures, establishing bonds between families and compensating for the loss of a daughter's labor and fertility.

Distinguished from dowry, which flows in the opposite direction.

Also called bride-price.
