palimony

Cohabitation breakup payment

Palimony is financial support paid by one partner to another after the end of a long-term relationship in which the couple was not married.

The term blends "pal" with "alimony" and emerged in the 1970s from a famous lawsuit involving actor Lee Marvin.

Unlike alimony, palimony has no automatic legal standing and typically requires proof of an agreement between partners.

She sued for palimony after their fifteen-year relationship ended.
