brake blocks
Friction stopping pads
Brake blocks are the pads of rubber or composite material that press against a wheel rim or rotor to create friction and slow a vehicle.
The term appears most often with bicycles: I need to replace my brake blocks—they're completely worn down.
Also called brake pads or brake shoes depending on the braking system.
