bowling greens
Flat rolling lawns
Bowling greens are smooth, closely mowed grass surfaces designed for lawn bowling.
The grass is kept level and trimmed short so balls roll true.
A single such surface is a bowling green, and neighborhoods or parks named after them often retain the term: Bowling Green in lower Manhattan.
The term sometimes appears as one word: bowlinggreen.
