mosh pits
Slam dancing zones
Mosh pits are areas at rock or punk concerts where audience members engage in aggressive, chaotic dancing—pushing, shoving, and slamming into each other.
The activity is called moshing, and participants understand the rough contact as communal release rather than violence.
Pits form spontaneously near the stage: I lost my glasses in the mosh pit.
The term extends figuratively to any chaotic, competitive environment.
