bouton

Nerve ending bulb

A bouton is a small knob-like swelling, particularly the terminal enlargement at the end of a nerve fiber where it forms a synapse with another cell.

The term appears primarily in neuroscience and anatomy: The synaptic bouton releases neurotransmitters into the cleft.

From French for "button."
