bourdon

Deep sustained tone

Bourdon names a low-pitched drone or sustained bass tone.

In pipe organs, a bourdon is a stopped pipe producing a deep, muted sound.

In music more broadly, it refers to the drone string on instruments like hurdy-gurdies or the bass pipe of a bagpipe—the continuous note against which melody plays.

A bourdon can also be a pilgrim's staff, though this sense is rare outside historical contexts.
