botnets

Hijacked computer armies

Botnets are networks of computers infected with malware and controlled remotely, typically without their owners' knowledge.

These hijacked machines—called bots or zombies—can number in the thousands or millions, coordinated to send spam, launch attacks that overwhelm websites, or mine cryptocurrency.

The botnet was responsible for taking down several major banks' websites.
