blue marble
Home from space
Blue marble refers to Earth as seen from space—a small, fragile sphere of blue oceans, white clouds, and brown landmasses against the blackness of space.
The term comes from the famous 1972 Apollo 17 photograph showing the whole planet, which resembled a child's marble.
The image and phrase evoke environmental awareness and the planet's vulnerability: We only have one blue marble.
