blacklines

Document change tracking

Blacklines are documents showing changes between two versions of a text, with deletions, additions, and modifications marked—typically in legal and business contexts where tracking revisions matters.

The term comes from the black lines that highlighting software traditionally used to mark altered passages.

To blackline a document is to compare versions and generate such a marked-up copy: We'll need to blackline the contract before the meeting.
