biobased
From living sources
Biobased describes materials, products, or chemicals derived wholly or partly from biological sources—typically plants, algae, or other renewable organic matter—rather than from petroleum or fossil fuels.
The term appears frequently in discussions of sustainability and green manufacturing: biobased plastics, biobased fuels, biobased packaging.
A product labeled biobased may still undergo significant industrial processing; the designation refers to the origin of its raw materials, not necessarily to biodegradability or environmental impact.
