betake

Cause oneself moving

Betake is an archaic or literary verb meaning to go or take oneself somewhere: He betook himself to the countryside.

It appears almost exclusively in the reflexive form betake oneself and primarily in past tense: She betook herself to bed.

The word survives mainly in historical fiction and deliberately old-fashioned prose.
