beat boxing

Mouth-made drums

Beat boxing is vocal percussion—using the mouth, lips, tongue, and voice to imitate drum machines, turntables, and other musical sounds.

It emerged from hip-hop culture in the 1980s as a way to create beats without instruments.

A skilled beat boxer can layer rhythms, bass lines, and sound effects simultaneously: He beat boxed while she freestyled over it.
