bean pod

Legume's outer shell

A bean pod is the elongated seed case of a bean plant, containing the beans inside.

The pod itself is sometimes eaten whole when young and tender, as with green beans or snap beans, or discarded after the mature beans are shelled out, as with kidney beans or black beans.

She snapped the ends off the bean pods before cooking them.
