barn theater
Agricultural building stage
A barn theater is a theater housed in a converted barn, typically in rural or semi-rural areas.
These venues became popular in the mid-20th century as summer stock theaters, where acting companies would stage plays during warm months when the uninsulated structures were usable.
The rustic setting became part of the charm: We saw a production of Oklahoma at the old barn theater outside town.
Some barn theaters have evolved into year-round professional venues while retaining the name and atmosphere.
