barbital

Early synthetic sedative

Barbital is a barbiturate drug, one of the earliest synthetic sedatives, used medically as a sleeping pill and anti-anxiety medication in the early twentieth century.

Like other barbiturates, it carried risks of dependence and fatal overdose, and has been largely replaced by safer alternatives.

Also called barbitone in British usage.
