veronal

Early sleeping pill

Veronal is a trade name for barbital, one of the earliest barbiturate sedatives, used in the early twentieth century to treat insomnia and anxiety.

The drug fell out of favor as safer alternatives emerged and its potential for overdose and addiction became clear.

It appears in period literature and historical accounts of poisonings and suicides.
