ball culture
Underground runway competitions
Ball culture is the underground community, originating among Black and Latino LGBTQ+ people in New York, centered on elaborate competitions called balls.
Participants walk (compete) in categories judged on appearance, dance, and attitude—voguing, realness, runway.
The culture is organized into houses, chosen families led by mothers and fathers who provide support and mentorship.
She found her community in ball culture after her family rejected her.
