social assimilation
Blending into society
Social assimilation is the process by which individuals or groups adopt the customs, values, and behaviors of a dominant culture, often at the expense of their original identity.
The term appears in discussions of immigration and minority integration: Pressure toward social assimilation was intense for early twentieth-century immigrants.
Assimilation may be voluntary or coerced, gradual or rapid, and debates continue over whether it benefits society or erases valuable diversity.
