background actor
Scene's silent presence
A background actor is a performer who appears in a film or television scene without speaking lines or significant action—part of the scenery rather than the story.
They populate restaurants, walk down streets, or fill stadium seats to create realistic environments.
The term is preferred in the industry over the older *extra*, which some consider dismissive: She worked as a background actor for years before landing her first speaking role.
