back burner

Low priority status

Back burner refers to a position of low priority or temporary neglect.

The metaphor comes from cooking: pots on back burners receive less attention than those in front.

Something on the back burner is set aside while more urgent matters take precedence: We put the renovation plans on the back burner until we had more money.

To back-burner something is to deprioritize it.
