autoimmune disorder
Body fights itself
An autoimmune disorder is a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues.
Normally the immune system distinguishes self from foreign invaders, but in autoimmune diseases this recognition fails: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the joints.
Common examples include lupus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and celiac disease.
The causes remain poorly understood, though genetic and environmental factors both play roles.
