art patrons
Gallery benefactors today
Art patrons are individuals or organizations that financially support artists and the arts.
Historically, patrons commissioned works and sustained artists through direct sponsorship—Renaissance painters depended on wealthy families and the Church.
Today the term covers museum donors, grant foundations, and collectors whose purchases enable artists to work: The gallery attracted art patrons from across the city.
