army division
Troops under command
An army division is a major military unit typically comprising 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers, organized under a commanding general and capable of sustained independent operations.
Divisions contain multiple brigades or regiments along with support units—artillery, engineers, logistics.
In most armies, divisions are the smallest formations that combine all the elements needed for extended combat: The 82nd Airborne Division deployed to the region.
The term also appears in discussions of military history and strategy: Three divisions crossed the river at dawn.
