antislavery movement
Fight against bondage
The antislavery movement was the organized effort to abolish slavery, particularly the campaign that grew in Britain and America from the late 18th century through the American Civil War.
Also called abolitionism, the movement ranged from gradual emancipation advocates to radical abolitionists who demanded immediate freedom for all enslaved people: Frederick Douglass became the most prominent voice of the antislavery movement.
