slave power
Plantation interest bloc
Slave power refers to the political influence wielded by slaveholding interests in the antebellum United States, particularly Southern planters and their allies in Congress.
Abolitionists and Northern critics used the term to describe what they saw as a conspiracy to expand slavery and dominate federal policy: The slave power controlled the Supreme Court and pushed for new slave territories.
The concept fueled sectional tensions leading to the Civil War.
