antiphons
Choral call-and-response verses
Antiphons are verses or phrases sung or chanted responsively in Christian worship, typically alternating between two groups or between a leader and congregation.
The term comes from a Greek word meaning "sounding against" or "responding." In liturgical music, an antiphon often frames a psalm, sung before and after it: The choir began with the antiphon, then the congregation joined for the psalm.
