antiheroes

Morally gray leads

Antiheroes is the plural of antihero—a protagonist who lacks conventional heroic qualities like courage, nobility, or moral clarity.

Unlike villains, antiheroes are still central figures we follow and often root for, but they may be selfish, cowardly, or morally compromised: Walter White and Tony Soprano are television's most famous antiheroes.

The antihero emerged as a literary type in the twentieth century, reflecting disillusionment with traditional heroism.
