angio-edema

Deep skin swelling

Angio-edema is swelling beneath the skin, typically around the eyes, lips, throat, or hands, caused by fluid leaking from blood vessels.

It often accompanies allergic reactions or hives but can occur independently.

When it affects the throat, angio-edema can obstruct breathing and become life-threatening.

Also spelled angioedema.
